Definition
Engagement means the willingness to "go the extra mile". It is based on strong motivation.
Motivation means "driving force". It is based on emotional and neuronal activities, which refer to the striving for goals or desirable target objects.
In the process of motivation:

motives for action are generated
-
alternative courses of action are considered,
-
a choice is made between action alternatives,
-
action is directed towards a goal, and
-
action is controlled and kept going on.
Leadership and motivation are both influencing factors for social interaction and control.
Retention or Commitment
describe the extent to which a person identifies with an organization and feels aligned and bonded to the organization's goals and culture.
